For the owner who is getting fewer calls
Why the phone rings less, in plain words
An answer engine is a search tool that writes one answer instead of listing ten links. That is the shift behind the quiet phone. Here is what it did, with the numbers, and what decides whether your business is in the answer.
What changed
For fifteen years a local business lived or died by page one of Google. Across 12.2 million searches, the first result took 27.6% of clicks and the tenth took 2.7%. You paid for the site, you asked for reviews, you climbed. It worked.
In May 2024 Google put an AI-written answer above the links for many searches, and by May 2026 that answer reached 2.5 billion people a month. When the answer appears, people click a result 8% of the time, against 15% without it. Pew measured that in 2025. Fewer clicks means fewer calls, even for a site that still ranks.
At the same time, people started asking instead of searching. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly users of ChatGPT in March 2026. Gartner predicted in 2024 that traditional search volume would fall 25% by 2026.
What the answer looks like for your trade
Ask an AI for a plumber near Rocklin and it does not list ten links. It names a few. A study of 200,085 local AI answers found they name about two to four businesses, and the Google Business Profile is the single most cited source at 28.63% of citations. Facebook once described the same squeeze on its own feed: “it's becoming harder for any story to gain exposure”
(Facebook for Business, 2014). The AI answer is that squeeze again, with fewer seats.
The three things that decide it
- Can the engines read you? Many sites block AI crawlers without knowing it. Two of our own domains did, by a default setting at the edge that no page shows. Our scanner caught it; the score went from 3 to 96 after a one-minute change.
- Do you say plainly who you are? What you do, where, for whom, hours, prices, and the questions you answer on the phone every day, as sentences a machine can lift. Only 3.97% of pages carry a machine-readable local business record.
- What do others say? Reviews, directories, local press, forums. The engines trust what others say about you more than what you say about yourself.
Each one can be fixed, in that order. The first is minutes. The second is a week. The third is a habit.
How to find out which one is yours
Run the free scan on this site. It reads your site the way a crawler does, asks the engines about your trade, and tells you whether you were named. The report lists the fixes in order. If you would rather hear it, book 30 minutes and Ryan reads you the answer on the phone.
Questions people ask
- Why does my phone ring less than it did five years ago?
- Because the way customers find a business moved again. Google puts an AI answer above the links for many questions, people click a result 8% of the time when a summary appears against 15% without one, and ChatGPT alone has more than 900 million weekly users. If the engines cannot read your site or do not know you, the call goes to the names they do say.
- Is it my website, or is it Google?
- Usually both. The engines first need to reach and read your pages; many sites block AI crawlers without knowing. Then they need plain sentences about who you are, where, and what you do. Then they weigh what others say about you: reviews, directories, mentions. The free scan on this site shows which of the three is yours.
- How fast can this be fixed?
- Crawl and listing fixes show in days to weeks. Being named in AI answers depends on reviews and third-party mentions, which take months. We re-check every month and show you the answer, not a score.
