A Sacramento how-to
How to be named by ChatGPT in Sacramento
A customer in Rocklin asks ChatGPT for a good plumber. ChatGPT is an answer engine: it reads pages, listings and reviews, then writes a short answer that names a few businesses. This page is the order of work to be one of them, for an owner in the Sacramento region.
What the engines read first
They read what they can reach. In 2025 Cloudflare measured 1,091 crawls per referred visit for OpenAI's bots and 38,066 for Anthropic's, which tells you two things: the engines read far more than they send back, and a site that blocks them is simply absent. BrightLocal found ChatGPT used the business's own website in 58% of the local answers it studied, next to listings and review sites.
Step 1: check that they can read you
Fetch your home page the way a crawler does. Our free scan does it for every major AI crawler and tells you which ones get a 403, a redirect loop, or an empty JavaScript shell. riscent.com, one of our own sites, scored 3 out of 100 the first time because every crawler was stuck in a login loop no browser ever saw. One change took it to 96.
Step 2: say who you are, where
Write the plain sentences a machine can lift: “Rocklin Plumbing Co. is a plumber in Rocklin, California, serving Roseville, Lincoln and Loomis, open 7 am to 6 pm, with drain cleaning from $149.” Put the same facts in the machine-readable record behind the page. Only 3.97% of pages carry a local business record; yours should.
Step 3: the profile and the listings
The Google Business Profile is the most cited local source in AI answers, at 28.63% of citations. Complete it: category, hours, service area, photos, services with prices. Then Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, with the same name, address and phone everywhere.
Step 4: reviews and mentions
The engines trust what others say about you more than what you say. Ask for a review after every finished job, answer every review, and get listed where your trade is listed in Sacramento: the chamber, the trade association, the neighborhood groups. In the BrightLocal study, review sites and directories made up most of the remaining citations after the profile and the website.
Step 5: answer the questions
Write one short page per question customers actually ask: “Do you work in Elk Grove?”, “What does a water heater cost installed?”, “Are you open Saturday?” Answer first, in one sentence, then the detail. As Facebook once said of its own feed, “it's becoming harder for any story to gain exposure”
(Facebook, 2014); the pages that get lifted are the ones that answer plainly.
Step 6: ask, every month
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the question your customer would ask, with your city in it. Write down who was named. Do it monthly. That is the only measurement that matters, and it is the one we send our clients.
Questions people ask
- How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business in Sacramento?
- Make sure its crawlers can read your site, say plainly what you do and where in Sacramento, keep your Google Business Profile complete, earn recent reviews and mentions on other sites, and publish short answers to the questions customers ask. Then ask ChatGPT the question yourself each month and see whether you are named.
- Does ChatGPT use my website at all?
- Often, yes. BrightLocal found ChatGPT drew on the business website in 58% of local answers it studied, alongside listings and review sites. If the site cannot be read, that share goes to competitors.
- How long does it take to show up?
- Crawl fixes show in days. Being named depends on reviews and mentions, which take months to build. There is no shortcut that survives a second look.
